Thanks, Drew. Obviously, when I say that kids need to “take responsibility”, I’m referring to those kids who have a choice in the matter. There was a brief time between my two coming-out moments when some of my classmates tried to out me against my will, and life was very, very rough. It simply wasn’t the right time or place for being openly gay. (I’d seen one other kid try, and I didn’t like the results at all.)

Thankfully, I was able to squeeze back into the closet for a few more years. Whether that’s because my high school friends believed me when I said I was straight or because they were comfortable being complicit with my lie, I’m not sure.

You know, you had me until “On a micro level, teens need to take responsibility for coming out in a way that doesn’t put them at risk.” I get where you’re coming from. Look at Towleroad today and the article about the kid who’s upset that he can’t wear eye shadow to school…

However, coming out isn’t always a choice, sometimes it’s forced on kids by their peers’ actions. And I get that we all have to take responsibility for our own lives, but, for me, that sentence is loaded with more than a bit of potential blame for potential victims. I don’t know what word choice would be better though.

Overall, it’s probably just a sad indictment of society at large and the very real reality that, yes, teenagers are terrible people… Which probably means I’m pissed off at society, not your word choices…

That’s how I found my own bio-dad.

Hey. I found this through a search. My mother was just watching Dial M For Murder and, as she often does when she sees the actor, John Williams, she reminds me of the time she saw him on a beach in La Jolla, CA. To this I always reply, oh, he’s the guy who used to do the commercial for some classical music records. Well, I remembered that it was something something dance number 2 by Borodin. So I added “commercial” to my search and here I am.:) So nice to find a link to the actual commercial. Strange to find an ad comforting, but it is. Thanks for tracking it down.:)

Hi, Richard–
I followed your and Jonno’s blogs some years ago and we corresponded a bit, particularly during your evacuation during Katrina. Then things got very busy for me and I wasn’t keeping up with bloggers the way I wanted to.

Today I thought about you and wondered if sturtle still existed, found it and saw a tag for adoption, which I read from beginning to end. I was fascinated because I had adopted two baby girls (not biologically related) from Korea and raised them as a single gay father. They are now grown into magnificent women and have given me a couple of terrific sons in law. You write very well about your story and there were points of correspondence as my younger daughter’s siblings in Korea eventually made contact which led to some nice exchange of photos and family history.

Things seem to be going well for you and Jonno (the husband and I just celebrated 14 years) and I will be stopping by regularly. All Best — Will

Just want to say that I’m from Midtown Tulsa, not South Tulsa, and that most of us from my part of the city consider ourselves midwesterners. Few of us have much of a southern/rural accent and identify more with Kansas City and Minneapolis than cities like Dallas and Atlanta, which we consider to be inferior places. Quite snobby, if you ask me, since I am now a resident of Atlanta, but I do think you’re right on the money when you question whether Oklahoma is part of the South. Note that western Oklahoma is more like North Texas and New Mexico than Arkansas. The accents you heard in Brokeback Mountain fit that place to a T. Overall, I think the Oklahoman identity is more closely tied to its pioneering, hard-working past than to any one culture or way of life.
